The Great Lakes ports and shipping systems study has four goals: To ascertain the effect of the St. Lawrence seaway upon traffic of U.S. Great Lakes ports; to highlight trends in the shipping system, pinpointing those ports which are favored by these trends; to recommend some generalized means whereby recognized problems may be met and favorable developments augmented; and to provide a complete reference source for those interested in United States Great Lakes ports. It is presented in two parts. The document contains part 1 which is the analytical section of the research. The first three areas, or goals, are covered therein. (Author)
