The objective of this study was to develop an engineering/operational methodology to assess the feasibility of, and to design as a preliminary concept, the total mooring systems for cargo ships and associated unloading platforms operating in open and sheltered coastal waters. The methodology was to be capable of examining the mooring systems in terms of performance, logistic burden, installation, and operational modes in the context of the Expeditionary Logistics Facility. Mooring concepts are proposed and alternatives identified in terms of the state of the art and advanced technical solutions. Cost effectiveness comparisons are made of the proposed mooring concepts using the methodoloty developed in the study. Technical barriers and trade-offs are identified; RDT and E developments are recommended. (Author)
