As traffic signal junction layout has remained virtually unchanged since the early 1950s, a full-scale traffic experiment investigating saturation flows at conventional and new junctions was conducted on a test track. At conventional junctions the effects of the width of the stop-line and the lanes on the approach to the junction were assessed, as were geometric stagger, exit constriction and the traffic flow opposing a saturated stream of right-turners. The new designs incorporated flared approaches, substantial deflection for straight-ahead vehicles, and provision for deep non-hooking right-turn movements. High potential saturation flows for straight-ahead and right-turn traffic were demonstrated. Used as roundabouts with the signals turned off, the new junctions showed adequate off-peak capacity despite non-optimal design of the roundabout.
