The document presents a study of current railroad freight car management systems in the U.S., describing and analyzing the kinds of communications, information and computer hardware and software used. It relates the operation of these systems to implementation of public policy and railroad management objectives. The study addresses the compatibility of the systems for traffic interchange, and makes a ten-year forecast of development trends in communications, information and computer hardware/software used in freight car management systems. The study assesses the need for systems in the DOT or ICC corresponding to those in the railroads, and recommends future action by the DOT to insure a uniform railroad car information system for use by the industry and government.
