If bicycles were to be equipped with reflectors in the spokes or with reflecting tires the number of severely injured cyclists could be decreased. There is no difference between the efficiency of reflectors in the spokes and that of reflecting tires. Both increase the perceptibility in darkness of the bicycle. An increase of the conspicuity of the bicycle is needed because the analysed accidents took place during peak hour within built-up areas and on wet roads, when there is very little possibility of perceiving the cyclist from a distance. Besides the cyclist is only partly visible within the other traffic.
