The utilization of military medical evacuation resources to supplement the existing emergency medical service system and the search and rescue program in a 15-county, central California area is described. The Military Assistance to Safety and Traffic (MAST) Program consists of provision of military helicopters equipped and manned as air ambulances in the event of emergencies, such as gunshot wounds, heart attacks, farm accidents, etc., and for interhospital transfer of critical patients, premature infant transfer, emergency pickup and delivery of blood and medicine, and similar situations. The helicopters serve within a 100-nautical mile radius from Fort Ord, where the Army's 237th Medical Detachment is stationed. Procedures for authorization, making a request, post-request actions, and request abortion are given. Valid MAST missions are listed, and enroute flight times to 11 points in the service area are shown on a map. Aircraft capabilities and limitations (crew, range, load, equipment, weather, ground hazards, loading procedures) and radio communications procedures are given. An interhospital transfer check sheet is provided, as is a sample patient transfer and referral record form.
