This document is an overview of a study performed for the US Coast Guard to provide an information base and recommendations for the establishment of noise limits for US merchant ships. The study consisted of (1) a search of the literature on the effects of noise on humans and existing data on noise aboard US merchant ships, (2) a review of existing and proposed noise standards, (3) measurement of the noise and noise exposure of the crew aboard seven representative US merchant ships, and (4) preparation of recommendations for noise limits on US merchant ships.
