The program was directed at evaluating the potential advantages of expandable structures to serve in certain space applications such as airlocks, crew quarters experiment chambers, emergency escape capsules, and crew transfer tunnels. The human factors characteristics and geometry were established after extensive underwater neutral buoyancy testing by the Air Force Aero Medical Laboratory. The airlock design dimensions were found adequate to accommodate the entry of a fully suited rescuer with back to rescue another crewman simulating an incapacitated conditions. Hatch size, latching, and opening features, mobility restraints and lighting requirements were also established. (Author)
