The purpose of the paper is to provide data to the Army Tasks for the 70's Study Group headed by COL Donald Bletz. Specifically the 1920-1940 time period was researched for missions assigned to and accomplished by the US Army. These missions were to be projected and related to the 1970's. Missions identified in Ganoe's, History of the US Army were selected as the base. Missions identified and determined to be inapplicable to the 1970's are: carry US Air Mail; operation of radio facilities for commercial and private purposes; and participation in economic recovery activities such as the CCC, WPA and PWA. Missions identified as being applicable to the 1970's are: protect and defend the United States and areas of vital interest; provide civil functions of the Corps of Engineers; provide diaster relief (hurricanes, floods, blizzards and earthquakes); conduct mapping activities; conduct research and development; and conduct planning (includes industrial mobilization, military mobilization and reorganization).
