The Navy Navigation Satellite System has been an operational element of the U. S. Navy since 1964. Since that date, it has provided worldwide, all-weather, around-the-clock position data to ships at sea for navigation and to land users for survey and geodesy studies. The doppler shift, or apparent change in frequency of a stable source caused by relative motion between observer and source, is used in this system both in determination of the satellites' orbits and in navigation or survey and geodesy. The report has been compiled to provide a general description of the Navy Navigation Satellite System and a detailed description of the Translocation Subsystem and its operation. This material is presented on a level that can be understood by a high school graduate with a technical background. (Author)
