Experience gained during the project 'German Experimental Ship Station' is presented. Ship routes were monitored using a satellite date link between the ship and the shore. Position transmission is shown to be possible without manual intervention. Transmission costs are reduced with the INMARSAT communication system which disposes of European ground stations. With the GPS/NAVSTAR satellite navigation system the ship position is determined to within 21 m, against 242 m previously.
