A safety belt survey was conducted to collect information concerning problem areas in using seat belts. A total of 1,186 complaints were received from owners of 715 vehicles in the survey. The complaints were analyzed, categorized and classified by seat belt component, vehicle model, model year and vehicle manufacturer. The complaints were also classified by four major problems areas: broken or defective safety belt components, difficulty in using or locating seat belt, discomfort in wearing seat belt, and hazards in the belt system. The belt components examined in this survey are the buckle, webbing, retractor, guide ring, anchorage and adjustment mechanisms. More than 1,000 consumer letter complaints received by the NHTSA other than those of the in-house survey were also analyzed to allow comparison of the two complaint data sources. To verify the survey findings and to determine the rate of safety belt problem corrections, a telephone follow-up survey was performed. A brief summary of survey results is presented.
