The attack helicopter is probably the Swedish Armed Forces' next acquisition of a new major flying weapon platform. The present study concerns simulators for this type of helicopter. With the definition simulator being applicable to a wide range of devices a framework for categorization is proposed. Where existing frameworks focus on technical complexity this framework emphasizes the skills the pilots are intended to train in the simulator. Originating in how simulators place themselves in the framework, the question of what simulators are most cost effective appears. An attempt to shed light on an interesting part of the framework is made with an explorative study concerning pilots using a relatively simple simulator. The participants were 8 active helicopter pilots from the Armed Forces Helicopter Wing. Results indicate that the training of important skills, like tactical decision making and cooperation, could be trained without having to resort to high-end simulator installations.
