The Accident Investigation Division of the National Highway Safety Bureau is conducting in-depth studies of highway crashes through contracts with university and research-based multidisciplinary teams generally consisting of various medical specialities, highway and traffic engineers, automotive and mechanical engineers, police investigators, lawyers, psychiatrists, and other safety-related disciplines. The program has the following basic study objectives: (1) to identify all of the contributing factors in automobile crashes, (2) to identify injury causation, (3) to evaluate the effectiveness of countermeasures, and (4) to provide early detection of design and functional problems of the vehicle and the highway. Enclosed are summaries of recent in-depth studies submitted by these teams to the National Highway Safety Bureau. The full case report may be obtained through the National Technical Information Service, 5285 Port Royal Road, Springfield, Virginia 22151. (Author)
