Many medium sized communities offer public bus transportation, however, this made does not always keep pace with growing demand for quick and efficient service. In an effort to respond to this rising demand, innovative new bus services have been introduced. Lane Transit District in Eugene Oregon is developing a Bus Rapid Transit system that is to be operational within 2 or 3 years. The concept of Bus Rapid Transit has been around since the 1970's, and is experiencing a rebirth in the 1990's. Lack of funding and the need for large urban populations and related densities are often the reasons that smaller sized communities choose to develop unique bus transit systems rather than implementing light rail transit. Bus Rapid Transit is one option toward moving incrementally toward light rail transit. Lane Transit District's Bus Rapid Transit will offer reduced travel times, more convenience, and a positive public image by using new low-floor, multi-door buses, signal prioritization, off-vehicle fare collection system, and distinctive new designs and colors.
