A high-speed rocket sled experiment was designed by the Air Force Weapons Laboratory to produce a partially ionized gas layer around the rocket sled's nose cone similar to that which would occur during atmospheric reentry of an actual flight vehicle. To generate the comparable electron density levels at the relatively lower rocket sled speeds, a passive mass injection system was developed to enhance natural electron concentrations by injecting highly combustible and easily ionizable species into the turbulent boundary layer.
