Deutschland, die Niederlande und Schweden haben derzeit 70-80% ihrer Strecken mit dem Globalen Mobilfunksystem, Variante Eisenbahn, (GSM-R) ausgerüstet. Andere Länder führen es ebenfalls in schneller Folge ein. Im Beitrag ist dazu eine Tabelle über die Projekte von 15 Staaten enthalten. In Europa hatten sich in der Vergangenheit 35 verschiedene Varianten für die Anwendung des Funks bei der Eisenbahn herausgebildet bis GSM-R von der UIC als Standard ausgewählt wurde. Die historische Entwicklung sowie die Funktion dieses Systems werden im Beitrag erläutert. Für das Europäische Eisenbahn-Steuerungssystem ETCS, Stufe 2, ist GSM-R das unbedingt erforderliche Kommunikationssystem.
