This paper presents results of an extensive ship research program carried out at the Netherlands Ship Model Basin during the period from 1963 to 1969. Various high-speed propulsion problems are dealt with. Results are given of fundamental cavitation research into the mechanism of cavitation inception and related scale effects. A computer program for the unsteady lifting surface theory for ship screws was developed and some results obtained herewith are given. Various unconventional propulsion devices were theoretically and experimentally investigated. and in particular some results of these investigations on ducted propellers, contra-rotating propellers, low-noise propellers and the water-air ramjet are presented.

Research into various interaction effects was carried out and in this regard the results of comparative tests carried out with a model of a tanker and a model of a cargo-liner, each equipped with successively contra-rotating propellers and conventional propellers are given and discussed. Finally, various ship motion studies were performed, and the results of theoretical and experimental work on the motions of a ship in a seaway, slamming phenomena, and on the added resistance in a seaway are presented.
