A method for prediction of hydrodynamic characteristics of a propeller operating in non-uniform field of flow is presented. This method is based on lifting surface theory, and takes into account some of the most important unsteady effects. The algorithm for calculation of the time-dependent pressure distribution on the propeller blades is employed for prediction of cavitation extent, unsteady forces and pressure pulses induced on the hull surface. Some of the results of experimental verification of the method are presented. The method described is a result of a joint research project carried out by the Institute of Fluid-Flow Machinery in Gdansk and the Ship Research Institute of Norway in Trondheim.
