High-power lasers are used in military aircraft for a variety of tasks, including remote sensing, laser-based infrared countermeasures as well as in laser directed energy weapons. The problem is getting the laser energy from the source to the other parts of the system. Photonic crystal fibres could provide a way of efficiently transmitting power and light around military aircraft for sensor and electronic-warfare systems.
