The application of image processing and computer vision techniques to the analysis of video sequences of traffic flow offers considerable improvements over the existing methods of traffic data collection. The key to the development of a road monitoring system based upon IA is adaptability. An adaptive system would ease installation of the equipment by aiding with its own initialisation. Such auto-initialisation is considered in this paper. Specifically the automatic location of road lanes. This task has benefits not just in the installation stage but throughout the operating period of the unit, as the ability to automatically locate lanes allows the system to re-calibrate itself in response to changing circumstances without the need for human intervention.
