In 1994 four variable message signs (DRIPs, dynamic route information panels) were put into use on motorways A1, A2, A4 and A8 leading to the ringway A10 around Amsterdam. The DRIPs supply car drivers approaching the A10 ring road around Amsterdam with information about traffic conditions on the entire A10 ring road. The DRIPs are designed to make driving on the A10 ring road more efficient, safer and more comfortable. To find out whether these objectives are met, Rijkswaterstaat directie Noord-Holland commissioned Bureau Goudappel Coffeng, traffic consultants, to conduct an evaluation. Effects on network performance, user behaviour, safety, technical performance, and cost-effectiveness of the system were evaluated. The paper describes the study carried out and gives a summary of the findings.
