This paper describes a 5 kW prototype integrated motor/propeller unit in which the prime mover is a switched reluctance sector motor. In this device, the propeller is mounted at the centre of the rotor and hence there is no gearing between the motor and the propeller. The paper considers the implications for motor design that the use of a direct drive arrangement imposes and addresses the trade off between power converter rating and the overall efficiency of the unit.
