Under competition from other forms of transport, railway operators are seeking to offer their passengers ever-increasing speed and comfort. Further improvements are desired, but conventional (passive) suspension technology is now reaching the limit of its optimisation and development. Improvements to speed and comfort could be obtained by further improvements to the quality of the track, but this is becoming increasingly difficult, and improved suspension systems could now be more cost-effective.
