Rapid synchronization acquisition plays a significant role in the structure design of ultra-wideband (UWB) receiver systems. We propose an improved rapid timing acquisition algorithm for UWB, bit reversal block search (BRBS), by employing a bit reversal technique in the serial block search (SBS) algorithm. The SBS algorithm does not provide the best choice of the search block length. Moreover, when the signal-noise-rate (SNR) is more than 10db, the mean acquisition time of the SBS algorithm will become high with the increase of the number of the total search points, which will be on the verge of that of the normal serial search algorithm. Analytical and numerical results show that the BRBS algorithm greatly reduces the synchronization acquisition time, which is much smaller than that of the SBS algorithm. Especially, when the search interval is small, the BRBS algorithm is able to achieve good performance.
