Light emission from photonic crystals based and surface plasmons based devices are discussed. Functional optical devices based on photonic crystals, such as photonic crystal laser are described together with their design, fabrication and the possibility of integrating these into photonic integrated systems. Quantum efficiency enhancement in light emitting diodes through the energy transfer between quantum wells (QW) and surface plasmons (SP) is described. Enhancement of light emission by SP-QW coupling is observed for visible light. Photoluminescence spectra of InGaN/GaN QW coated by metal layers are presented.
