Rollover incidents are a major factor in road accidents worldwide especially when traversing curved roads at high speeds. Such accidents often result in serious injuries to the passengers as well as damages to the vehicle, making them a cause of serious concern for automobile manufacturers. The lateral acceleration and complex dynamics such as aerodynamics, suspension involved in such maneuver can lead to loss of control over vehicle and tires losing ground contact leading to rollover incident. The lateral forces such as centrifugal force generated in such maneuvers are related to vehicle velocity. When vehicle velocity exceeds critical velocity for particular curvature, the car will rollover jeopardizing the safety of occupants as well as other road users. The drivers may not be able to correctly predict the critical velocity for curvature. Therefore there is need of intelligent braking system which will aid the driver by reducing the speed and keeping it below critical value to mitigate the risk of rollover accidents. This research proposes a fuzzy logic based intelligent braking system which utilizes fuzzy logic controller that takes into account the vehicle speed and road curvature. The proposed fuzzy logic based controller has been validated in SimuLink Environment. Various curved roads scenarios were simulated and the controller was able to keep the vehicle speed below threshold. The findings demonstrate that the system effectively maintains vehicle speed according to the curvature. The results validate the efficacy of proposed system in mitigating rollover risk and enhancing vehicle safety on curved roads.
