This paper describes some channel coding schemes that are used in optical recording. The various trade-offs that are made, such as error propagation and efficiency, are discussed. The origin of the redundancy that is typically found in channel coding schemes, is described. An example is given of how this redundancy might be used to carry a volatile encryption key in a conventional channel coding scheme. Finally several additional valuable characteristics that could be designed into channel coding schemes are discussed.
