This study was directed towards comparing the run up caused by monochromatic and simple irregular waves on a smooth 1 on 10 slope. Wave runup was measured by use of a modified step-resistance wave gage which gave reliable measurements of extreme values and also provided a complete time history of the runup-air interface on the slope. Irregular waves cause considerably higher extreme values of runup than monochromatic waves even when runup was normalized by dividing by the standard deviation of the incident wave water surface displacement. The research is of a preliminary nature, and the findings are being used to develop a comprehensive wave runup and overtopping study to be conducted at CERC' s new facilities at Fort Belvoir Virginia.
