This report presents results of an investigation conducted to evaluate the capabilities and limitations of the Iowa Sediment Concentration Measuring System (ISCMS). The manner in which the ISCMS responds to a group of particles and to a single particle is presented. Specifically, problems with nonuniformities in the transducer field and problems created by inadequate frequency response are discussed. The results of tests conducted in an oscillatory flow facility are evaluated and the use of the ISCMS for measuring the instantaneous suspended sediment concentration is reviewed. Recommendations for improvement of the instrument are also suggested
