The present invention relates to a system and method for sensing a side-rear area of a vehicle, provided to clearly sense an object in a blind area even under a rapid change in the dimming conditions. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the system for sensing a side-rear area of a vehicle comprises: vision sensors, each of which is installed on the left and right sides of the vehicle; infrared light sensors, each of which is installed on the left and right sides of the vehicle to be adjacent to the vision sensors; a control unit for analyzing a blind area by combining information received from the vision sensors and the infrared light sensors; and a display unit for visualizing or auralizing the data analyzed by the control unit. According to the present invention, vehicle detection in a side-rear area and measurement of relative distance and relative speed by the vision sensors can be measured through interconnection with the infrared light sensors, thus an object in a blind area can be clearly detected even under a rapid change in the dimming conditions.
