PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fuel handling device and an operation method for the same capable of securing an earthquake resistance without need of reinforcement of main members of a traveling truck and a traversing truck and without increasing the weight by structure changes.SOLUTION: A fuel handling device includes: a traveling truck 7 moving on a traveling track for vehicle via a traveling truck wheel 20a; a traversing truck 9 mounted on the traveling truck 7 and moving on a traversing track set in a direction orthogonal to the traveling track via a traversing truck wheel 20b; and a fuel gripping device mounted on the traversing truck 9 and gripping a fuel assembly in a reactor pressure vessel for taking out the fuel assembly from the reactor pressure vessel. The traveling truck wheel 20a and the traversing truck wheel 20b respectively of the traveling truck 7 and the traversing truck 9 are formed with an elastic body, and a rigidity control device for changing the rigidity of the traveling truck wheel 20a and the traversing truck wheel 20b respectively of the traveling truck 7 and the traversing truck 9 on the basis of a detection signal of an earthquake occurrence.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 6
