A bumper assembly 114 for a vehicle 110 having a vehicle structure defining a longitudinal axis 158, the bumper assembly comprising: a bumper beam 122 extending in a vehicle width direction; an energy absorption system (162, figure 6) fixedly attached to the bumper beam for absorbing impact energy when an object impacts the bumper assembly; and, a mounting mechanism for fixing the bumper assembly to the vehicle structure, wherein the energy absorption system is configured to deploy the bumper beam between first 154 and second 160 positions along the longitudinal axis relative to the vehicle structure. The energy absorption system may comprise a pair of hydraulically activated pistons (164) housed in recesses in longitudinal members (118) of the vehicle. A control system may be provided such that the energy absorption system deploys the bumper beam to the second position when a row of foldable vehicle seats 146 is in a deployed position and possibly occupied. In the event of an impact the bumper beam may be forced to move to a third position (196, figure 9).
