An autonomous on-road vehicle with a large front mirror, has a mirroring element 220 located in front of an occupant 222 who sits in a front seat of a compartment. The mirroring element has height and width exceeding 25x25 cm, captures at least 10x10 degrees of the occupants forward field of view from the horizon to at least 10⁰ below the horizon during normal driving, and provides an effect of reflecting more than 25% of the light arriving from the occupants direction. The perceived compartment volume of an autonomous vehicle may be increased by the mirroring element. A camera 221 may take video of the outside environment in front of the occupant, send the video to a computer 224 to generate a representation of the outside environment in front of the occupant at eye level, and a display located in front of the occupant may present the representation to the occupant. The mirroring element may be a Fresnel type optical reflector.
