Disclosed is a system for controlling an angular position of a component of an aircraft comprising a component having a shaft 104 that includes at least one magnet 202, 204, 206, 208 and a housing 350 configured to receive the shaft and including at least one coil 300, 302, 304 configured to generate a magnetic field based on a current through the at least one coil. Preferably the component is a variable vane in a turbine system but may also be an aileron, a flap, a fan blade a valve or the like. The at least one coil may comprise a first coil coupled to a first power supply to generate a current through the first coil and a second coil coupled to a second power supply to generate a different current through the second coil. The system may further comprise a position sensor to detect the angular position of the shaft within the housing.
