A computer-implemented method for estimating mass and road load parameters of a vehicle comprises providing a dynamical model of the vehicle. State variables of the model comprise a speed of the vehicle and mass and road load parameters of the vehicle, one of the state variables having a dynamical evolution depending on input variables. Input variables at a previous time are measured based on the state variables. Predicted state variables and predicted output variables at a future predetermined time are calculated, the predicted output variables comprising a speed of the vehicle and an energy consumption of the vehicle. A predicted covariance of the state variables is calculated based on the predicted variables. Actual output variables comprising an actual speed of the vehicle and an actual energy consumption of the vehicle are calculated. A predicted output error between the predicted output variables and the actual output variables is calculated. The state variables are corrected based on the predicted output error and the predicted covariance.
