The invention relates to a method for determining a maximum current limit (40) of a battery system having at least two batteries, wherein the following measures are carried out: measuring a separate current (10-1,10-2) at each of the at least two batteries; measuring a total current (10-s) of the battery system; determining, for each of the measured separate currents (10-1,10-2), a current ratio (12-1, 12-2) between the measured separate current in question and the measured total current (10-s); determining a maximum individual current limit (15-1, 15-2) of the battery system for each of the at least two batteries on the basis of the determined current ratio (12-1, 12-2) in question and a nominal maximum current limit (30-1, 30-2) of the battery in question; selecting the smallest determined maximum individual current limit (15-1, 15-2) as a maximum current limit (40) of the battery system; providing the determined maximum current limit (40) as a maximum current limit signal (41). Alternatively or additionally, the measures can also be carried out with resistances (11-1, 11-2, 11-s). The invention also relates to a control device (1).
