The invention relates to a method for driving hovering devices and hovering sub-systems of devices in agriculture and forestry which have the design-dependent ability to hover on the spot, in particular to also apply materials and material mixtures, said devices or sub-system comprising one or more flow generators for generating air flows or flows of other gases or gas mixtures which hold the device or sub-system of the device in a hover primarily by the generated vertical thrust, and which generate forces for propulsion and/or for changing the movement. According to the invention, flows or sub-flows are generated with an inclination of the central axis of the flow or sub-flow of at least 10° and at most 90° relative to the normal of the horizontal plane of the device or sub-system, and thrust is generated by a variable flow speed and/or flow direction of the flows and/or sub-flows, the thrust having at least one component on the horizontal plane of the device or sub-system and being used for propulsion and/or for changing the speed of the device or sub-system and/or for compensating for disturbances on this plane when maintaining or having the possibility to maintain a horizontal or constantly inclined orientation of the hovering device or sub-system.
