The invention relates to a multi-speed transmission (7), especially to an automatic transmission used for railway vehicles. The multi-speed transmission includes multiple planetary gear sets (PR1, PR2, PR3 and PR4). The planetary gear sets are accommodated in a housing (13), and different variable speed ratios between a drive shaft (AN) and an output shaft (AB) can be displayed by selectively operating shift elements (S1 to S6) through the planetary gear sets. Therefore, the variable speed ratios form a forward gear and a reversing gear that correspond to each other and are presentable in number. The multi-speed transmission (7) is provided to enable forward running and reverse running to be identical in running performance in a mode and method that is as compact as possible. A sun gear (SO1) of the first planetary gear set (PR1) is connected to the drive shaft (AN), a gear ring (HO1) of the first planetary gear set (PR1) is connected to the output shaft (AB). And a planetary gear support (PT1) of the first planetary gear set (PR1) is coupled to a gear ring (HO2) of the second planetary gear set (PR2). Moreover, a sun gear (SO2) of the second planetary gear set (PR2) is connected to at least one of other planetary gear sets (PR3, PR4), and a planetary gear support (PT2) of the second planetary gear set (PR2) is fixed to the housing (13) through the first shift element (S1) to present the reversing gear, and also connected to the output shaft (AB) in an anti-torsion manner through the second shift element (S2) to present the forward gear.
