The present invention provides a method of estimating the environmental force acting on a supported jack-up vessel comprising the steps of positioning the vessel in force determination position; then measuring the strain on at least one support leg of the jack-up vessel; and calculating an estimate of the environmental force from the measured strain in the at least one support leg whilst the vessel is in the force determination position. The method allows a dynamic positioning system of the jack-up vessel to determine a suitable thrust to apply to the vessel as the support legs of the vessel are raised. For increased accuracy, the measurement of the strain on the at least one support leg of the vessel of the method of the present invention may comprise the steps of measuring the strain in the at least one support leg when no thrust is being applied to the vessel; applying thrust to the vessel; and monitoring the variation in the strain in the at least one support leg as the thrust is applied.
