The invention belongs to the technical field of steel smelting, and particularly relates to steel, a preparation method thereof and application of the steel in preparation of a crash box. The steel provided by the invention is used for preparing the collision box and comprises the following components in percentage by weight: 0.16%-0.20% of C, 0.20%-0.40% of Si, 1.30%-1.50% of Mn, less than or equal to 0.015% of P, less than or equal to 0.010% of S, 0.10%-0.20% of Cr, 0.03%-0.05% of V and the balance of Fe and inevitable impurities. The steel billet is subjected to optimized component design, it is guaranteed that the steel billet has high strength and sufficient toughness, and the direct use target of a user is met.
