A vehicle control device according to an embodiment is provided with: a recognition unit that recognizes a surrounding situation of a host vehicle on the basis of information obtained from at least one of a detection device and map information; and a driving control unit that generates a target trajectory of the host vehicle on the basis of a recognition result of the recognition unit, and that controls one or both of the speed and steering of the host vehicle so that the host vehicle travels along the generated target trajectory, the recognition unit being configured to recognize the host vehicle in a branch section connecting a trunk road and a plurality of branch lanes, the driving control unit searches for a lane increase start position that satisfies a predetermined condition from a maximum width position of the branch section toward a start point of the branch section, and generates a target trajectory that travels on the branch lane through the lane increase start position.
