In a method for braking a vehicle by means of at least one electric machine of the vehicle operating as a generator, a torque generated by the electric machine is adjusted by a damping control function in order to reduce a periodic deflection of a drive train coupled to a rotor shaft of the electric machine relative to the rotor shaft. Furthermore, a braking desired signal representing a target braking torque is detected, a deactivation condition for deactivating the damping adjustment function is identified as a function of the braking desired signal, the damping adjustment function is deactivated when the deactivation condition is identified, the braking torque is generated on the basis of the braking desired signal by operation of the electric machine as a generator, and the damping adjustment function is activated. During the generation of the braking torque, a reactivation condition for reactivating the damping control function is identified, and when the reactivation condition is identified, the damping control function is reactivated.
