In particular, a sensor (320) and method are provided for sensing gas absorbed in a hydraulic fluid (370) in an aircraft damper (350) in which the hydraulic fluid (370) and the gas (360) are in fluid communication with each other. The sensor may be incorporated in a shock absorber (350) or in a service device (300) such as a service vehicle. The amount of gas absorbed in the hydraulic fluid (370) is set as a parameter, which in combination with other parameters allows a user to determine the maintenance status of the shock absorber (350) and derive a service action using improved means.
