The present disclosure provides methods and systems for improved fouling spark plug detection. Methods and systems for determining the presence or absence of engine misfire or spark plug fouling are presented. In one example, an engine speed change rate is arranged in an engine data block, and a root mean square value of the engine speed change rate is determined. The presence or absence of engine misfire or spark plug fouling may be based at least in part on the root mean square value.
