In some embodiments, the disclosed subject matter relates to systems and methods for dynamic object identification and environmental changes for use with autonomous vehicles. In order to efficiently detect changes in an autonomous vehicle or partially autonomous vehicle, embodiments may use techniques based on background removal and image subtraction, using motion detection rather than full object identification of all objects in the image. In some embodiments, other vehicles or mobile devices (e.g., drones) are used to retrieve and store background images of a road segment proximate to a road side unit of the road segment or a virtual road side unit in the cloud for use by autonomous vehicles. Other embodiments are described and claimed.
