In an exemplary embodiment, a vehicle system is provided that includes a sensor array and a processor. The sensor array is configured to generate vehicle sensor data relating to a target vehicle in proximity to the vehicle. A processor is coupled to the sensor array and is configured to at least facilitate: initiating an overtaking maneuver of the vehicle via instructions provided to the drive system when the processor initially determines that a condition for overtaking the vehicle is valid; determining, via a processor, whether an overtaking condition of the target vehicle is still valid based on the updated sensor data reflecting the different traffic conditions after starting the overtaking maneuver; and further controlling the overtaking maneuver based on the determination of whether the overtaking condition with respect to the target vehicle is still valid.
