The invention relates to a method for controlling an electric motor drive (100) of a motor vehicle by means of a control unit (106), in which at least one wheel (116) of the motor vehicle can be driven by an electric motor (104) of the electric motor drive (100), and in which the electric motor drive (100) has at least one energy source (108) for the electric motor (104). Here, the method comprises: determining a request to apply a deceleration torque to the wheel (116); determining state information (140, 142, 144) of the motor drive (100); selecting an operating mode (134, 136) of the electric motor (104) from at least two possible operating modes (134, 136) of the electric motor (104) as a function of the determined state information (140, 142, 144); and actuating the electric motor (104) in the selected operating mode (134, 136) in order to apply a deceleration torque to the wheel (116), the electric motor (104) being actuated in a first operating mode (134) from the possible operating modes of the electric motor (104) in such a way that the rotational energy (120) of the wheel (116) is converted into electrical energy at a first efficiency and the rotational energy (120) of the wheel (116) is converted into electrical energy at a second efficiency in a second operating mode (134) from the possible operating modes of the electric motor (104). In a second operating mode (136), which is a possible operating mode of the electric motor (104), the electric motor (104) is actuated in such a way that the rotational energy (120) of the wheel (116) is converted into electrical energy at a second efficiency, which is lower than the first efficiency.
