A method of protecting an occupant of a vehicle including an interior, an exterior, and an inlet through which air circulates is presented. The method includes monitoring the quality and pressure of air inside and outside the vehicle. It is determined whether internal or external air has less contaminants. The internal air pressure is adjusted to create a pressure difference between the internal air pressure and the external air pressure to determine a direction of movement of air through the inlet.
