The present disclosure provides "adaptive fleet vehicle scheduling using edge sensing". A system includes a multi-access edge computing camera that can determine characteristics of a group based on machine classifications and counts of various elements of the group derived from imaging the group of waiting vehicle passengers with the camera, and complementing at least the count based on short-range wireless broadcasts received from mobile devices owned by members of the group. The camera communicates the characteristic to a remote scheduling process, and the scheduling process determines that an unscheduled fleet vehicle has a current capacity that adapts to the determined characteristic. The scheduling process determines that the characteristics satisfy a defined basis for scheduling the unscheduled fleet vehicles, and in response to determining that the characteristics satisfy the defined basis for scheduling the unscheduled fleet vehicles, schedules the fleet vehicles.
